Anti-Theism and Accepted Bigotry
In the atheist community, which I consider to be part of, we pride ourselves on logic, reason, critical thinking and unbiased opinions. If one is to truly be unbiased, a critical thinker, and logical, they must also be critical of their own views and of their community. I am constantly critical of my beliefs and my community to ensure I practice what I preach. And unfortunately, I have found an issue in my community.
I imagine my following bit will upset many atheists, but that is fine. I am here to present the facts, not make friends. Those that welcome my opinion are practicing our principles and those that are upset are most likely the ones I am talking about…
The atheists that I am talking about, specifically, are the anti-theists. I will start by saying that my following bit does not represent the view of all atheists that consider themselves anti-theists, for not all members of a said group, share the same views. However, do consider what “anti” means…it means against. In this case, it means against theism or religion.
Atheists make many claims about religious people. They claim they are stupid, ignorant, illogical, faith based, intolerant, and bigots. Naturally, they reject the notion that they may also have some of these characteristics and that they are superior. Because of this preconceived notion, they ignore the fact that they display some of these same traits, yet readily accept them. One of the major claims is that religious people are intolerant and are bigots.
Not tolerant of others' views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one's own.
Tolerance or toleration a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.
bigot: someone who, as a result of their prejudices, treats other people with hatred, contempt, and intolerance on the basis of a person's ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics.
Anti-theism is the active opposition of theism and/or religion. This goes against tolerance, it is intolerance. Intolerance on the basis of religion is the definition of bigotry. Anti-theist are by definition, are intolerant, and bigots. Oddly enough, they claim these to be the characteristics of religious people. Really, this should be the end of the debate, but I will take it to the next level.
These anti-theists try to defend their bigotry (and that is what it is,) with highly illogical arguments. They try to justify their views with examples, examples of the extreme cases, or the exception to the rule.
An example would be 9/11 and extremist Muslims. Granted, about 10% of Muslims are of this extreme persuasion, which is a large number but they are the minority of Muslims. Yet they justify their hate of Muslims because of the extremist ones. They look at Saudi Arabia and ignore liberal UAE.
Another example is the Westboro Baptist Church or fundamentalist Christians that oppose homosexuality. There is also the FLDS, in which their leader, Warren Jeffs, raped and abused underage girls. There is also the issue of Catholic priests molesting children. What they ignore are the liberal Christians that accept homosexuality and oppose Westboro. They ignore the fact that the Mormon Church, long ago, outlawed and spoke out against polygamy. They ignore the Catholic priests that never did anything wrong and they ignore all the good the Church has done. Churches were the largest contributors to Hurricane Katrina relief. They ignore the fact that most Christians are not Young Earth Creationists and Biblical Literalists. Many Christians accept Darwin’s theory as fact and do not see a conflict between science and religion. The majority of Democrats ARE Christian.
I could use the same type of arguments to validate bigotry towards any group, which is the normal practice of bigots. Here are a few stupid examples…
Blacks make up 13% of the US population and 50% of the prison population, therefore black people are violent criminals. Or I could simply “I got robbed by a black person,” which apparently validates my hate of them.
Mexicans are coming here and taking our jobs and leeching off of our welfare system.
Gays are wrecking marriage, and the family structure, and turning out kids gays.
All the horrible drivers on the road are women, therefore women should not be allowed to drive.
In the late 1800s to mid 1900s scientists use “science” to justify racism. They sterilized single mothers because they were unfit because they had a child out of wedlock (even if they were raped.) Eugenics was used to get rid of anyone that was seen as “inferior,” which was a very subjective term.
Slavery was justified because Africans were not as “evolved” as whites and were not Christians.
Hitler put forth a reason to kill minions of Jews, and Stalin killed millions to promote atheism.
Anti-theists are no different than other types of bigots. None of these reasons for intolerance and hate are logical. They are put forth to defend their bigotry. They are not based on logic or reason, but faith in their preconceived view. These views ignore the majority of good people because of a few crazies. Good people are attacked and looked down upon because of a minority. The stance of anti-theism encompasses the exact characteristics that they claim to be opposed to. So why is it that this view is accepted and promoted? I strongly suggest we change this view in the atheist community or we must accept the term HYPOCRITE…
